Strauss’ Musik sei »Hochleistungssport für das Orchester«, sagt die Dirigentin Anna Handler. Dann ist, um im Bild zu bleiben, »Also sprach Zarathustra« das Werk mit dem markantesten Startschuss. Für etwas Entspannung in diesem Programm sorgt ausgerechnet Béla Bartók, interpretiert von »Artist in Residence« Kirill Gerstein.
Ja, Bartóks 3. Klavierkonzert bringt eine betont pastorale Note, ein Durchatmen, es ist von eigenwilliger luzider Schönheit und naturnaher Spiritualität. Und damit eine Gegenkraft zu Strauss’ »Zarathustra«: Hier trumpft einer mit Potenz und berstend vor Selbstbewusstsein auf. Von klanglicher Opulenz, sagt die in München aufgewachsene Deutsch-Kolumbianerin Anna Handler, dürfe man sich aber als Dirigentin nicht überwältigen lassen: Bei Strauss müsse man »diejenige sein, die den Überblick behält, wie ein Pilot im Sturm, und sicherstellen, dass jedes Detail hörbar bleibt.« Einen beherzten Zugriff verlangt auch das als deutsche Erstaufführung präsentierte Orchesterwerk »The Rock You Stand On« von John Adams: Der Komponist, seit Jahrzehnten unter den meistaufgeführten Zeitgenossen weltweit, spricht von »kraftvollen, pulsierenden Rhythmen«, die sich »zu rockigen Synkopen verwandeln«, und von einem »jazzigen Puls«, der aus dem Orchester eine Big Band macht.

Yes, Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 3 brings a distinctly pastoral touch, a moment to catch one’s breath; it possesses an idiosyncratic, lucid beauty and a spirituality rooted in nature. And thus serves as a counterpoint to Strauss’s »Zarathustra«: Here, one triumphs with power and brimming self-confidence. But as a conductor, one must not let oneself be overwhelmed by sonic opulence, says Anna Handler, a German-Colombian who grew up in Munich: With Strauss, one must »be the one who keeps the overview, like a pilot in a storm, and ensure that every detail remains audible.« John Adams’ orchestral work »The Rock You Stand On«, presented here in its German premiere, also demands a bold approach: The composer, who has been among the most frequently performed contemporary composers worldwide for decades, speaks of »powerful, pulsating rhythms« that »transform into rock-style syncopations,« and of a »jazzy pulse« that turns the orchestra into a big band.
