Henry Purcell war so frei, Shakespeares »Ein Sommernachtstraum« in eine quecksilbrige Semi-opera zu verwandeln – wobei die Betonung auf »frei« liegt, denn im originalen Klassiker sind nach China transportierte Loblieder auf den Garten Eden ja eher nicht zu finden. Sage noch einer, den Briten wäre musikalisch nichts eingefallen!

Das war ja der oft kolportierte Vorwurf: Englands sei ein Land ohne Musik. Klar, Purcell war als Orpheus britannicus hochgeachtet, Werke wie seine famose »Fairy-Queen« sprühen nur so vor Einfallsreichtum und Temperament. Doch dann mussten erst einmal andere kommen, Georg Friedrich Händel etwa, um London mit Musik von höchster Qualität zu versorgen. Der Dirigent und Cembalist Richard Egarr aber kann demonstrieren, was es unterhalb des europäischen Festlands-Radars noch so zu entdecken gibt: mit Cipriani Potter sogar einen ausgewachsenen klassischen Sinfoniker. Der war mit Beethoven in Kontakt und mit Rossini, schrieb neun Sinfonien wie ersterer, und das mit einem Witz und Sinn für reizvolle melodiöse Wendungen wie zweiterer. Potter war nichts weniger als der erste Komponist von Rang auf der Insel, der sich am dramatischen Spätwerk Mozarts und an Beethovens sinfonischen Meilensteinen orientierte, um selbst Sinfonien auf der Höhe der Zeit zu erschaffen.

Henry Purcell took the liberty of transforming Shakespeare’s »A Midsummer Night’s Dream« into a playful semi-opera—with the emphasis on »liberty«, since the original classic doesn’t exactly feature hymns of praise to the Garden of Eden transported to China. Let no one say the British couldn’t come up with anything musically!

That was, after all, the oft-repeated accusation: that England was a country without music. Sure, Purcell was highly esteemed as the »Orpheus Britannicus«, and works like his famous »Fairy Queen« are brimming with ingenuity and spirit. But then others had to come along—George Frideric Handel, for instance—to provide London with music of the highest quality. Conductor and harpsichordist Richard Egarr, however, can demonstrate what else there is to discover beneath the radar of the European mainland: with Cipriani Potter, even a fully-fledged classical symphonist. He was in contact with Beethoven and Rossini, wrote nine symphonies like the former, and did so with a wit and sense for charming melodic turns like the latter. Potter was nothing less than the first composer of note on the island to draw inspiration from Mozart’s dramatic late works and Beethoven’s symphonic milestones in order to create symphonies of his own that were at the cutting edge of their time.
