Finale with two masterpieces. Who doesn´t know and love Schubert´s only piano quintet with its famous set of variations on the »moody trout«. The cheerful tone of the song imbues the entire quintet with an aura of light-hearted musical joy, to which its light, bright sound also contributes. In the greatest possible contrast to this, Brahms´ long matured last piano quartet, which reflects deep biographical ambivalence. When he sent the final version to his publisher, Brahms once joked that a picture of the composer »in Werther´s costume« should be printed in the score – an allusion to Goethe´s desperate suicide as a reflection of the after-effects of the turmoil he had experienced in his love triangle with Clara and Robert Schumann over 20 years earlier.
