Was könnte er damit gemeint haben? Diese 2. Sinfonie sei »eine Seelenbeichte«, hat Jean Sibelius gesagt – doch was genau lag ihm auf der Seele? Wollte er beichten, bei Brahms abgeschrieben zu haben? Sicher nicht! Aber der klassisch-durchdachte Brahms-Ton steht ihr dennoch gut.
Beichte hin oder her, das Publikum war sofort begeistert von dieser Sinfonie. Und deutete sie, was gar nicht Sibelius’ Absicht war, als Akt des Widerstands gegen den Finnland-Bedroher Russland – eben als »einen in höchstem Maße überwältigenden Protest gegen all die Ungerechtigkeit, die in unserer Zeit die Sonne um ihr Licht und die Blumen um ihren Duft zu berauben droht«, so der Dirigent und Sibelius-Zeitgenosse Robert Kajanus. Mitunter wurde sie die »Sinfonie der Unabhängigkeit« genannt, vielleicht hat auch deswegen der Dirigent Aivis Greters ein besonderes Auge auf sie geworfen. Greters kommt, wie so viele herausragende junge Dirigenten derzeit, aus dem Baltikum. Das kompakte »Quick & Classy«-Programm wird ergänzt um ein Cellokonzert, das bewusst kein Virtuosenkonzert sein möchte. Bei Robert Schumann stehen Klangpoesie, Kantilene und Atmosphäre im Vordergrund, oder wie Clara Schumann es formulierte: »Von welchem Wohlklang und tiefer Empfindung sind alle die Gesangstellen darin!«

What could he have meant by that? Jean Sibelius said that this Second Symphony was »a confession of the soul«—but what exactly was weighing on his mind? Did he want to confess to having copied from Brahms? Certainly not! But the classically refined Brahmsian tone suits it well nonetheless.
Confession or not, the audience was immediately captivated by this symphony. And they interpreted it—which was not at all Sibelius’s intention—as an act of resistance against Russia, the threat to Finland—precisely as »an extremely overwhelming protest against all the injustice that in our time threatens to rob the sun of its light and the flowers of their scent,« according to the conductor and Sibelius’s contemporary Robert Kajanus. It was sometimes called the »Symphony of Independence«; perhaps that is why conductor Aivis Greters has taken a special interest in it. Greters, like so many outstanding young conductors today, comes from the Baltic region. The compact «Quick & Classy» program is complemented by a cello concerto that deliberately does not aim to be a virtuoso piece. In Robert Schumann’s work, the focus is on sound poetry, cantilena, and atmosphere—or as Clara Schumann put it: »What melodiousness and deep feeling are found in all the vocal passages within it!«
