Das Publikum donnerte mit seinem Applaus noch in das Orchesternachspiel des Chopin-Klavierkonzerts hinein, das kommt nicht oft vor in Warschau. Passiert ist es 2021 beim berühmten Chopin-Wettbewerb, am Klavier saß der Sieger in spe: Bruce Liu, damals 24.
Seitdem gilt der in Paris geborene und in Montreal aufgewachsene Pianist als allererste Wahl für Chopin und dessen virtuose Klavierkonzerte – wobei er das Kunststück vollbringt, Virtuosität nie mit Effekthascherei auf eine Stufe zu stellen. Bruce Lius Spiel ist von beachtenswerter Entspanntheit und von nobler Eleganz. Damit dürfte der Kontrapunkt gesetzt sein zu jenem »Ballett der Straße«, das Igor Strawinsky ebenfalls in Paris mit seinem »Petruschka« entworfen hat. Da geht es rau zu und demonstrativ aufgeregt, die Puppe Petruschka führt ein hartes Leben auf den Theaterbrettern des Jahrmarkts. Hölzern seine Bewegungen, aber weich sein fühlendes Wesen. Dieses Programm ist eine einzige große Feier, mal derb und plakativ, mal voller Esprit und tänzerischem Elan.

The audience applauded thunderously even as the orchestra played the postlude to Chopin's piano concerto, something that doesn't happen often in Warsaw. It happened in 2021 at the famous Chopin Competition, with the future winner at the piano: Bruce Liu, then 24.
Since then, the Paris-born, Montreal-raised pianist has been considered the first choice for Chopin and his virtuoso piano concertos – while accomplishing the feat of never equating virtuosity with showmanship. Bruce Liu's playing is remarkably relaxed and nobly elegant. This provides a counterpoint to the »ballet of the street« that Igor Stravinsky also created in Paris with his »Petrushka«. It is rough and demonstratively excited, with the puppet Petrushka leading a hard life on the theater boards of the fairground. His movements are wooden, but his sensitive nature is soft. This program is one big celebration, sometimes coarse and striking, sometimes full of esprit and dance-like verve.
